Superannuation Guarantee: Due dates and Considerations for Employees and Employers

From 1 July 2025, the superannuation guarantee (SG) rate increased to 12%, marking the final stage of previously planned increases. This means employers are required to contribute 12% of an eligible employee’s earnings to their super fund. SG contributions are generally due 28 days after the end of each quarter, and it’s important for both employers and employees to understand these deadlines, the potential penalties for missing them, and how upcoming changes could affect payment schedules.

1. SG Contribution Deadlines
Employers must make SG contributions for their employees by:

  • 28 October
  • 28 January
  • 28 April
  • 28 July

If a deadline falls on a public holiday, there’s an extra day to make the payment. To meet the rules, the contribution must be in the employee’s super fund by the due date, unless the employer is using the ATO Small Business Superannuation Clearing House (SBSCH).

2. Employers’ Responsibilities

  • To claim a tax deduction, SG contributions must reach the employee’s super fund by the quarterly deadline.
  • If using the SBSCH, contributions are considered on time if received by the clearing house by the due date.
  • Employers using commercial clearing houses should allow extra time, as some may take up to 14 days to process contributions.

What happens if deadlines are missed?
Even being one day late can trigger the Superannuation Guarantee Charge (SGC), which comes with lost tax deductions and penalties.

Upcoming Changes:
From 1 July 2026, if proposed laws pass, SG contributions may need to be paid at the same frequency as wages (weekly, fortnightly, or monthly). The SBSCH will close at that time, so businesses using it should plan to transition to a commercial clearing house.

3. Employees’ Responsibilities

  • Regularly check your super fund statements and make sure your employer contributions match your pay slips.
  • If contributions are late or missing, first discuss with your employer.
  • If that doesn’t resolve the issue, employees can contact the ATO for assistance.
