Practical Help for Businesses Impacted by Fuel Disruptions

With global fuel supply chains still under pressure, many Australian businesses are feeling the impact through higher operating costs, delayed deliveries and tighter cash flow.

To support affected businesses, the Treasurer and the ATO have announced targeted relief to provide short-term breathing room.

This is not a broad stimulus program. The support is practical, temporary and managed through the ATO on a case-by-case basis.

If your business has been affected by fuel supply issues, higher transport costs, reduced margins, or pressure on cash flow, you may be able to access support.

The relief may include more flexible payment plans, giving businesses extra time to manage existing tax debts while keeping cash available for wages, stock, fleet costs and other essential expenses.

The ATO may also remit general interest charges and late-payment penalties where payment delays are linked to fuel-related disruptions.

Businesses may be able to vary PAYG instalments if revenue has reduced or costs have increased because of higher fuel prices or supply slowdowns. This can help align tax instalments with current trading conditions.

For some affected industries, the ATO may also reduce compliance activity, such as audits and reviews, so businesses can focus on operations, staffing and customer commitments.

Where appropriate, the ATO may also pause debt recovery action while the business stabilises.

The ATO fuel response payment plan is currently available by application until 30 June 2026.

To access support, affected businesses will generally need to explain how higher fuel costs or fuel supply disruptions have affected their operations. Basic financial information may also be required to support the application.

This support may be particularly relevant for businesses in transport, logistics, manufacturing, agriculture and retail, where fuel volatility can quickly affect profitability and cash flow.

If your business has been affected by higher fuel costs or supply disruptions, it is worth reviewing your position early. Our team can help assess your eligibility, identify the support available, and manage the ATO process on your behalf.
